Methods and care
Carpet cleaning methods, how often to clean, and drying time
Most carpet is cleaned by hot water extraction, the method homeowners call steam cleaning and the one carpet makers such as Shaw recommend every 12 to 18 months. Low-moisture methods dry faster but clean less deeply, and carpet usually stays slightly damp for 6 to 12 hours after extraction.

What is hot water extraction?
Hot water extraction is a carpet cleaning method that sprays a hot cleaning solution into the pile and immediately vacuums it back out with the loosened soil. A truck-mounted machine heats the water and holds the recovered water outside the home, with hoses run through a door; a portable machine is carried in and plugged into the home’s outlets, which suits condos and upstairs units where hoses can’t reach.

Steam cleaning and hot water extraction
Steam cleaning is the everyday name for hot water extraction: the water is hot, not steam, and the machine rinses the carpet and pulls the water back out. Carpet shampooing is an older rotary-brush method that can leave soapy residue, which attracts soil, so most cleaners now rinse by extraction instead.
Low-moisture and dry carpet cleaning methods
Low-moisture carpet cleaning methods use a fraction of the water of extraction, so carpet dries sooner. Encapsulation works a cleaning solution into the pile that dries into crystals, which the next vacuuming removes; bonnet cleaning buffs the surface with an absorbent pad and is usually the cheapest method, at $30–$90 per room on Angi; dry compound cleaning brushes in an absorbent powder and vacuums it out. These clean the top of the pile well but reach less of the soil near the backing.
Which carpet cleaning method suits your carpet
Carpet fiber decides the method: most wall-to-wall carpet is nylon or polyester, which both take hot water extraction and low-moisture methods, while wool and wool blends need gentler chemistry and cooler water.
- Under warranty: hot water extraction, because warranties can require it
- Heavy soil, spills or allergies: hot water extraction, which reaches deeper into the pile
- Light upkeep between deep cleanings, or a room needed again the same day: a low-moisture method
- Pet urine: a urine treatment first, then extraction, never heat on the urine
- Wool: a cleaner who works with wool, which needs gentler chemistry and cooler water

The industry standard for carpet cleaning
The industry standard for professional carpet cleaning is ANSI/IICRC S100, the Standard for Professional Cleaning of Textile Floor Coverings, from the IICRC, an ANSI-accredited standards body. Its 2021 edition covers cleaning methods and chemistry, spot and stain removal, inspections before and after cleaning, and area rugs. Asking whether a company trains its technicians to it is a fair way to compare cleaners.
What carpet warranties require
Carpet warranties can make professional cleaning a requirement on a schedule: Shaw requires proof of periodic hot water extraction, using equipment certified under the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Seal of Approval program, to keep its carpet warranties. Keep each receipt with the date, the rooms and the method, because a claim may ask for them.
How often to clean carpet
Carpet should be cleaned professionally every 12 to 18 months, the interval Shaw recommends for hot water extraction. Homes with pets, kids, smokers or heavy traffic usually clean sooner, and people with allergies often clean on the short end of the range, because cleaning removes the dust and dander that vacuuming leaves behind. Renting? Move-out carpet cleaning covers what a landlord can deduct.
How long carpet takes to dry, and aftercare
Carpet usually stays slightly damp for 6 to 12 hours after hot water extraction, and low-moisture methods dry sooner. Carpet left wet for days can smell musty and grow mold: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises drying wet carpet and its backing within 24 to 48 hours.
- Walk on damp carpet in clean socks, not bare feet or street shoes
- Run fans and the air conditioning to move air across the carpet
- Putting furniture back: wait until the carpet is dry, and keep the tabs or blocks the cleaner leaves under the legs
- Keep pets off the carpet until it is dry
