How Stanley Steemer and Chem-Dry clean carpet
Stanley Steemer’s machines pump hot water into the carpet to release soil, then extract the water and the soil with it; the company calls this hot water extraction, often referred to as steam cleaning. Chem-Dry’s Hot Carbonating Extraction uses carbonation to lift soil to the surface for extraction, with about one-fifth the water of traditional steam cleaning, by Chem-Dry’s count.

Drying time: what each company says
Drying time is the clearest difference in what the two companies publish. Stanley Steemer says carpet typically takes 8 to 24 hours to dry fully, depending on humidity, temperature and airflow, and asks that the protective blocks under furniture legs stay until everything is dry. Chem-Dry says its carpet typically dries in 1 to 2 hours. In any home, airflow, carpet thickness and how soiled the carpet was move both numbers, and fans and air conditioning shorten them.
What does Stanley Steemer charge?

How to compare their quotes with a local company
Comparing a Stanley Steemer or Chem-Dry quote with a local company’s works best item by item:
- The same rooms, square feet and number of stairs on every quote
- The method named on the quote, and whether it meets your carpet warranty
- Pre-vacuuming and spot treatment, included or extra
- Pet urine treatment, priced as its own line
- The drying time they expect for your carpet
- The total, including any trip charge: California requires an advertised price to include mandatory fees
