Upholstery and couch cleaning: cost, fabric codes and drying

A fabric sofa costs $100–$300 to clean at national rates and a leather sofa $200–$500. The care tag decides the method, so the cleaner reads it and tests a hidden spot before cleaning the whole piece.

Upholstery fabric care codes: W, S, W/S and X

  • W: clean with water-based products
  • S: solvent cleaning only; water can leave rings or shrink the fabric
  • W/S: either water-based or solvent products
  • X: vacuum or brush only, no water and no solvent

Upholstery fabric care codes sit on a tag under the cushions or the deck. A piece with no tag gets a test on a hidden spot before anything else.

Cleaning a microfiber couch

A microfiber couch is usually polyester, and many carry an S code, so water can leave rings where it dries. Cleaners use solvent products on S-coded microfiber and brush the nap up as it dries.

Leather sofa cleaning

Leather sofa cleaning is done by hand: the cleaner wipes the leather clean and then conditions it, which is why it costs $200–$500 against $100–$300 for fabric. Suede and nubuck are handled separately.

How long a couch takes to dry after cleaning

A couch usually takes several hours to dry after cleaning, depending on the method, the fabric and the airflow in the room. Run a fan, keep the cushions off the deck so air reaches both, and stay off the piece until it feels dry.

Questions homeowners ask

What does an X code on a couch tag mean?

An X code means vacuum or brush only: no water and no solvent. Spots on X-coded fabric are a job for a cleaner who can test them safely.

Can upholstery cleaning shrink cushion covers?

Cushion covers can shrink when water reaches fabric meant for solvent cleaning, or when covers are machine washed. Following the care code, and testing a hidden spot first, prevents it.
